What you get with the newer iOS

iOS 26

A whole new look called Liquid Glass, plus smarter phone calls and messages.

  • Liquid Glass: buttons, menus, tab bars and the lock screen look like pieces of clear glass. They let the content behind them show through and bend the light at the edges, so the screen feels lighter and more open. App icons can also be set to a clear glass look.
  • Call Screening: when an unknown number calls, the iPhone answers for you and asks who is calling and why. You read their answer before deciding to pick up.
  • Hold Assist: when a company puts you on hold, the iPhone waits on the line for you and alerts you when a real person comes back.
  • Messages from unknown senders are moved to a separate list, so spam stays out of your main inbox. Group chats get polls and custom backgrounds.
  • A new Games app that collects all your games, progress and friends in one place.
  • Simpler Camera app, with Photo and Video front and center and other modes tucked away.
  • The battery screen shows how long until your phone is fully charged.

iOS 27

A rebuilt, much smarter Siri, more control over Liquid Glass, and a faster phone overall.

  • Speed: Apple says apps open up to 30% faster and AirDrop transfers finish up to 80% faster, including on older supported iPhones.
  • Liquid Glass slider: a new setting lets you choose anywhere from fully clear glass to a solid, tinted look, which helps if the see-through effect makes text hard to read.
  • Rebuilt search across the phone, Photos and Mail, for more useful results.
  • Smoother switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, so calls and videos drop less when you leave home.
  • New parental controls: kids can ask permission to open new websites, and parents can set daily time limits per type of app.

Apple skipped from iOS 18 straight to iOS 26 in 2025, so the number now matches the year after release. iOS 18 to iOS 27 is two updates, not nine.

When an iPhone stops getting new iOS versions, it keeps working as before. It just stops getting new features. Apple usually sends occasional security fixes for a while longer, then those stop too. Over time, apps start requiring a newer iOS, and banking and payment apps are often the first.

  • Latest iOS

    iOS 10.3.3›iOS 27

    What does this mean?

iOS is the software that runs the iPhone: the home screen, the built-in apps, the settings and the security protection. Apple releases a new version every September.

A phone on the newest iOS gets new features every year and regular security fixes. A phone stuck on an older version keeps working, but it no longer gets new features, and after a while it stops getting security fixes too.

Matters most if: You use banking, payment or work apps. They are usually the first to require a recent iOS.

  • Apple repair support

No longer repaired by Apple›Repaired by Apple

    What does this mean?

Apple counts from when it stopped selling the model, not from its release date. Vintage: Apple stopped selling it 5 to 7 years ago; repairs only while parts last. Obsolete: over 7 years ago; Apple no longer repairs it.

Checked against Apple's vintage and obsolete products list on 2026-10-11.

iPhone SE (2nd gen) — launched at $399

What your iPhone 5c sells for

Links open in a new tab. Prices are set by each seller and change daily.

  • Launch price (US)

    $99›$399+$300

    iPhone 5c: $99 with 2-year carrier contract

Prices are not directly comparable: one is a carrier-contract price.

    What does this mean?

The price Apple charged in the US on launch day, for the lowest storage option, before tax.

This is not what the phone costs today. Older models drop in price over time, so check the used and refurbished links for current prices.

Battery1 gain
  • Video playback

    10 hours›13 hours

    What does this mean?

Apple's battery test: how many hours the phone can play video nonstop on a full charge, in Apple's own lab conditions.

Real life uses more power (games, camera, weak signal), so you will get fewer hours than this. The number is still useful for comparing two phones, because Apple tests them all the same way. Batteries also wear out: an older phone today holds less than it did when new. You can see how much your current battery has left in Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

Matters most if: You often run out of battery before the end of the day.

Camera2 gains
  • Main camera

    8 MP›12 MP

    What does this mean?

MP stands for megapixels. One megapixel is one million tiny dots. A 12 MP photo is made of 12 million dots, a 48 MP photo of 48 million dots.

On a phone screen, a 12 MP and a 48 MP photo look almost the same. The difference shows when you zoom in, crop part of the photo, or print it large: more dots means detail holds up longer. More megapixels also lets the phone zoom 2x by cropping without losing quality.

Matters most if: You crop photos, print them, or zoom in on details later.

  • Front camera

    1.2 MP›7 MP

    What does this mean?

Megapixels of the selfie camera. More dots means more detail, as with the main camera.

Mostly noticeable when you crop or zoom into selfies, or on large screens during video calls.

Screen1 change
  • Screen size

    4 in›4.7 in

    What does this mean?

Screen size measured corner to corner, in inches. One inch is 2.54 cm.

A bigger screen is easier to read and better for video, but the phone is larger and heavier. A smaller phone is easier to use with one hand and fits more pockets.

Design & buttons4 changes
  • Unlock

    None (passcode only)›Touch ID

    What does this mean?

How you unlock the phone. Face ID recognizes your face. Touch ID reads your fingerprint.

Face ID works just by looking at the phone, even in the dark. Touch ID works well with a mask on, but needs a dry, clean finger.

  • Weight

    132 g›148 g

    What does this mean?

Weight in grams. 100 grams is about 3.5 ounces.

Around 30 grams difference is noticeable when holding the phone for a long time, lying down, or in a shirt pocket. Bigger batteries and screens add weight.

  • Frame

    Plastic (polycarbonate)›Aluminum

    What does this mean?

The material around the edge of the phone.

Aluminum is light and spreads heat well. Stainless steel is shiny and heavy. Titanium is strong and light. Day to day, most people notice the weight more than the material, and many use a case anyway.

    More in the glossary →

  • Water resistance

    None›IP67 (1 m)

    What does this mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, a standard rating for how well something keeps out dust and water. The first number is dust (6 is the highest), the second is water. IP67 survives 1 meter for 30 minutes. IP68 goes deeper; Apple lists the tested depth in meters.

Rain, spills and a quick drop in the sink are fine on all of these. Protection wears down over the years, and Apple does not cover water damage under warranty, so swimming with the phone is still not a good idea.

Charging & ports2 gains
  • Wireless charging

    None›7.5 W

    What does this mean?

W (watts) measures how much power flows into the battery. Higher watts means faster charging. This is for wireless charging, where you lay the phone on a charging pad.

At 7.5 W wireless charging is slow, good for overnight. At 15 W or more it is handy during the day. The top speed only works with a matching charger and power adapter.

    More in the glossary →

  • Wi-Fi

    Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n)›Wi-Fi 6

    What does this mean?

Wi-Fi generations. Each new one handles more devices at once and higher speeds: Wi-Fi 5 (2014), Wi-Fi 6 (2019), Wi-Fi 6E adds a new, less crowded radio band, Wi-Fi 7 is the newest.

You only get the extra speed if your home router supports the same generation. With an older router, the difference is small.

Chip & storage2 changes
  • Chip

    A6›A13 Bionic

    What does this mean?

The chip is the phone's brain. It runs every app, processes photos and handles the AI features.

A newer chip makes the phone faster, keeps it fast for more years, and decides which new features it can get. Apple Intelligence, for example, only works on recent models.

  • Storage options

    16 GB, 32 GB›64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB

    What does this mean?

Storage is where your photos, videos, apps and messages are kept. 1 TB (terabyte) is 1,024 GB.

iPhones have no memory card slot, so you cannot add storage later. As a rough guide, 128 GB fills up fast if you shoot a lot of video. 256 GB suits most people.
